a. reflections about

i) online learning and your role as a student of UPOU

As a student of UPOU, I should learn the materials independently.

I need to manage the time well so that I can study on time.

I need to take a initiative for learning every time to ask questions and discuss as a member of the course.

ii) the results of the tests you took in #3

a. What do the results of the tests say about you as a learner?

As a learner, I am focused, purpose-driven, and good at memorization.

b. What aspects of studying and learning do you find yourself lacking?

Results: Study skill Inventory,

Textbooks 30
Notetaking 11
Memory 32
Prep 46
Concentration 43
Time 15

SRC: 232

Time Management: 53

As a result, I lack time management skill and note taking skill for study.

c. How can you further enhance your skills in studying and learning? What changes are you will to do to make this possible?

As a working Mom with little children, I am so used to use my time for my work and children only. I will use my time more wisely so that I can be focused more in mornings. I will get up about 30 minutes earlier than usual and use my study time. Also I will reduce the time for social network to use for my study.

 b. pledge of commitment for this course.

As a student of EDS 111-Principles of teaching, I pledge to strive for excellence in the pursuit of wisdom, and to be of service to others in accordance with the ideals set forth in the Student Commitment.

eJournal Module 5

eJournal Module 5 – Professional Development

There are four metaphors which can explain about Professional Development. They are retooling, remodeling, revitalizing and reimagining. Grundy and Robison (2004) identify three interconnected purposes of CPD: extension, growth and renewal. Extension is through introducing new knowledge or skills to a teachers repertoire, growth is by the development of greater levels of expertise and renewal is achieved through transformation and change of knowledge and practice. In this module, CPD as a reimagining model for transforming our teaching and learning is introduced.

Professional Learning Communities is the term what explains about any imaginable combination of people who is interested in education. For example, it can be a grade-level teaching team, a school committee, a high school department, an entire school district, a state department of education, a national professional education, and so on.

To have an effective professional development, what is needed? In my opinion, first of all, an individual teacher should be interested in continuous learning about his or her own teaching. If a person is not motivated in continuous learning, CPD is a mere systematic organization. CPD must be for extension, growth and renewal. This module emphasizes about learning as a community. I agree with this. As the current education system focuses on collaboration, a teacher’s learning is also focused on collaboration. In order to support this learning community, a school leadership should be supportive. Also the learning community should share vision and values together.

Then why is it important to have continuous professional development to both teaching and learning? We teach students to become lifelong and continuous learner. Therefore it is inevitable for teachers to become lifelong and continuous learners.

eJournal Module 4 :Teaching Perspectives and Approaches

Task 6: Activity 4 Part 2:

  1. Go back to your post in Activity 4 Part 1 and think about the following questions:
  2. How would you describe your teaching perspectives prior to your reading of the module resources? How would you compare your prior conceptions about learning and teaching to the ideas discussed in the resources of this module? What factors influenced your conceptions about teaching and learning?

This is what I wrote in Activity 4 Part 1.

I think the teaching is the life formation process. Therefore teaching should include delivering the knowledge effectively and as well as modeling morality, citizenship and social behavior.

Learning happens when the learner is motivated into what they are learning. Therefore, a teacher should design a lesson according to learner’s needs and learning style.

This module explains about the concept of learning as a process of active engagement, a social phenomenon and different resources. Also the other article explains about SEL(Socio-emotional competencies) which is the process of developing student’s social –emotional competencies. SEL is the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors that individuals need to make successful choices. In this module, SEL explanation was impressive to take a consideration into my learning.

  1. Have your perspectives’ changed after studying the module resources? How or how not?

I think my perspective has been deepened through this SEL article. I knew what it means but I don’t think I really apply into my job yet.

  1. How willing or open are you in challenging your prior conceptions about teaching and learning, and applying contemporary teaching perspectives and approaches that would better serve the need of the students for more holistic and active learning?

I am quite open to this approach though I do not know the practical steps or application at the moment.

  1. Which among the contemporary teaching perspectives and approaches discussed in this module resonates with you? Why?

SEL grabbed my attention because currently I am a primary school teacher. Troubled students in my class have mostly low self-esteem and need special attention or care from teachers. Also average students’ learning ability will be influenced by those factors, I think.

  1. Knowing your inclination for specific teaching perspectives, how can you ensure that you will not fall into the trap of a one-size-fits-all teaching and that you will observe the teaching principles as intellectual and varied work – “adopting appropriate teaching roles to support learning goals” (Eberly Center, 2015)?

I mentioned that learning happens when the learner is motivated into what they are learning. Therefore, a teacher should design a lesson according to learner’s needs and learning style. Although in practice, it is not easy to meet the needs of the students. However, differentiation is the answer for all learner differences as resources which we learnt in this module

eJournal Module 4 :Teaching Perspectives and Approaches

I always write my education philosophy that I work for students to become self-directed, life-long, collaborative learners. This module enhanced my concept and philosophy in deeper way. I always believed each learner has different needs and learning style. Also teachers should assist students’ emotional states for learning. In this module said SEL is important because it increases students’ capacity to learn and it prepares to meet college and career readiness standards. This module introduces 3 components o learning ecology; engagement, safety and environment.

First, building the engagement between teachers and students, among students, among teachers, and between teachers and administration is important. Actually engagement is almost all of the teaching process because mostly teachers are disengaged from students although they try hard.

Second, securing safety is important. Students should be safe from bullying, violence so that they feel emotionally and academically safe to take risks in the classroom. If these are not secured, learners will not have enough capacity to learn further than their limit.

Third, the school should be well managed that students can have autonomy, competence, and connectedness.

As a primary school teacher, I think I tried to make this learning ecology as much as possible. I realized my problem or my school discipline policy about carrying on this practice. Actually I followed protocol every time I met the trouble. But simple things should be fixed. I found the tip that I should give reasonable action to misbehavior. Normally, school takes away play time whenever they see misbehavior. But mostly misbehaved students get never be fixed. Either they get more rebellious or they get troublesome more often that they cannot focus on their learning. Rather this module suggests that teachers should give right action to reasonable thinking. For example, if a student pushes over another child in the line, he or she should line up at the back for a week. Mostly in this case, a student loses his or her playtime which is not related to this matter. I learnt small tip from this module that I should give proper discipline in every matter.

Ejournal for Module 3- Knowledge base of teaching

Ejournal for Module 3- Knowledge base of teaching

Before studying this module, I have never realized about my teaching in systematical way. After studying this knowledge base, I realized what categories of the knowledge base a teacher should have. Not only the content knowledge but also the general pedagogical knowledge, as well as the culture, learners, and curriculum are the things the teacher should know.

TPACK model is introduced in radical way. Although teaching take place all the time, I never realized TPACK in some ways. This tool gives me a lot of insights that I can take along in my actual lesson. Technology, Pedagogy and content knowledge can be integrated in one nice lesson so that the learners get engaged better and learn more.

Module 2 E Journal

After studying the resources, has your definition of teacher professionalism changed? Why or Why not? If yes, how do you define teacher professionalism now and how is it different from your previous definition? What kind of professional teacher/educator would you like to be in the future?

My definition has been changed. -Definition of professionalism–> “The responsibility status of the occupation”, “achievement of service quality”, “achievement of the highest standards”, “Self-control”, “Professional autonomy”.

My previous definition was that teaching ability, teacher’s moral, social and interpersonal skill are the professionalism.

As a professional, teacher should have a qualification and specialized knowledge. At the moment, I am teaching in primary school. I need to get the qualification so I am taking this course. Also I am currently teaching at an international school, I really need to have professional knowledge about this. In the future, I would like to be a person who exhibits high agreed standards of behaviour dealing with kids.

eJournal Entry for Module 1

After reading the resources of this module, did your definition o reflection and your opinions of reflective teaching practice change? Why or why not? How? Include your answer to these questions in your eJournal for Module 1.

It has been changed. I thought reflection was more like a self telling stories in a journal.I did not know about the four lenses which were very new and informative. Four lenses can be helpful to see my teaching practice with more balanced view points. As a practice, I get feedback from peers and head teacher about my teaching. It is sometimes not always agreeable because they see things that I can’t see. And it gives me insight about my blind spots. Also the Gibb’s cycle was fascinating to apply in my practice.
